  • Abstract Abstract
¡@¡@This article examines Zhu Zi¡¦s Neo-Confucianism from Disposition of the Sages point of view, the first chapter deals with related background information on Disposition of the Sages. The second chapter examines the connotation of Zhu Zi¡¦s theory on inward cultivation, beginning from his fundamental concepts on being becoming a sage, the studies are focused primarily on its subjective and objective models respectively. Secondly, from the sage and mortal¡¦s perspective, reaffirming morality and self-cultivation are the building blocks in becoming a sage.
¡@¡@The proceeding third and fourth chapter are core to this thesis, they deal separately with cognition and practice of Disposition of the Sages. Concerning the aspect on cognition, Zhu Zi has correlated Disposition of the Sages with Creativity in Man and Nature, from a natural phenomenon perspective. In addition, Zhu Zi has noticed the relationship between disposition and physical nature, he argues that they are flows of ch'i , hence how to regulate this ch'i is crucial for a Confucianist to become a sage and virtuous. On the other hand, the author studied a book co-written by Zhu Zi and Lu Zuqian called Chin Ssu Lum, and proposed that Pei Sung Neo-Confucians has started a tradition of Disposition of the Sages based on aesthetics. From Cheng Ei to self-awareness, the mission of Confucian Transmission of the Dao has become one with Disposition of the Sages, becoming Zhu Zi¡¦s successor. On the other hand, Zhu Zi¡¦s description on Disposition of the sages, demonstrates his insistence on theories of becoming a sage and behavioral conduct
¡@¡@The fourth chapter concentrates on the meaning of practice, the author firstly compiled Zhu Zi¡¦s erroneous criticism on other academics¡¦ theory of Disposition of the Sages. This study examines flaws in academics mimicking Chan¡¦s mischievous spirit and Hu Hsiang school¡¦s sense of urgency. Zhu Zi has, through criticizing both schools, manifested his emphasis on the practice of Disposition of the Sages. Next, the author pointed out Confucius¡¦s three acclaimed apprentices Yen Yuan, Zeng Xi and Tseng Tsan, and compared them to Zilu, demonstrating that during the early years of the Nan Sung dynasty, Confucianists urgently needed someone as brave as Zilu, because he was able to keep Confucianism intact, while his courage kept out unwarranted rumors. Apart form the three apprentices, Zhu Zi has especially praised Zilu¡¦s disposition.
¡@¡@Through author¡¦s research, Zhu Zi wants the people to be inspired not only by the external appearance of Disposition of the Sage, but also its inner principles. He believes that the key element to Disposition of the Sage, lies in virtue of patience. Hence within the realm of Zhu Zi Neo Confucianism, Disposition of the Sage is no longer just a state mode, but a concrete and workable Ge Wu Practice.
¡@¡@The conclusion summarizes research on Disposition of the Sages, and attempts to relate it back to Neo-Confucianism, using Disposition of the Sages as a new agenda for Sung dynasty, and further examines how this agenda affects Neo-Confucianism in Pei Sung, also how this relates to politics, social mechanisms and the development of Confucianism. Further proposing the introspection of Disposition of the sages.
